Teen Pregnancy, Abortion Rates Rise

The teen pregnancy rate in the USA rose 3% in 2006, the first increase in more than a decade. The data also show higher rates of births and abortions among girls 15-19. About 7% of teen girls got pregnant in 2006, a rate of 71.5 pregnancies per 1,000 teens. That's up slightly from 69.5 in 2005, according to the Guttmacher Institute. In 1990, when rates peaked, about 12% got pregnant. In 2006, two-thirds of all teen pregnancies were to ages 18-19. Source: USA Today

60% of Young Men, Teen Boys Lie About Sex

Seventeen magazine conducted an online survey of 1,200 guys, ages 15 to 22 and found that 60% said they had lied about something related to sex; 30% lied about how far they have gone; 24% lied about their number of sexual partners; and 23% claimed not to be a virgin when they were. 45% of the respondents said that they are virgins and 75% said that there was "way too much pressure" from society to have sex. Source: USA Today

Too Familiar: Another Teen Taunted by Cyberbullies Commits Suicide

Even in death, Phoebe Prince was bullied. On a memorial page dedicated to the Massachusetts teen who had recently committed suicide, Facebook members left taunting comments that had to be removed. The 15-year-old committed suicide in her home on January 14, according to police. Afterward, her fellow students came forward to tell school officials that Prince had been teased incessantly, taunted by text messages and harassed on social networking sites like Facebook. The National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center estimated that nearly 30 percent of American youth are either a bully or a target of bullying. Researchers at the Yale School of Medicine, in a new review of studies from 13 countries, found signs of an apparent connection between bullying, being bullied and suicide. Source: ABC News

Youths' Use of Social Networking Reflect Their Face-to Face Interactions

New research from the University of Virginia suggests that socially well-adapted young people with positive relationships are more likely to use social networking websites (like Facebook) to further enhance the relationships they already have. On the flip side, young people with behavioral problems and difficulty making friends are more likely to use social networking in a negative or aggressive way, or steer clear of social networking altogether. Source: Science Daily
