I am a single parent with a 15 year old daughter. A few months ago my daughter was cutting herself on and burning herself. I was not able to afford proper counseling, so I took her to my pastor, and she did not have anymore incidents. I am really concerned about her, within the past 3 months she has gained over 20 pounds and she now weighs 198 pounds. She is always sleeping, and she gets depressed easily. She does not have very many friends and she does not let any of these friendships grow into anything more than just acquaintances. My daughter has missed 9 days of school since the year began. I really do not know what to do for her, I work 2 jobs to make ends meet, and one of those jobs is a graveyard shift. I do not want to continue to leave her at home alone, but if I quit my job we will be in a severe financial bind. I was wondering if you know of any organizations that I can get her involved in, in the Phoenix, Arizona area. Please help, any advice would be a blessing.

Thank you for contacting us. Although I do not know of any specific organizations in your area I am sending along some contacts that can help you find what you need to best assist your daughter. Be assured that you are taking the right step in getting help for her. Cutting, self-infliction, a dramatic change in weight and appearance, and the missed days of school are sure signs that she is struggling with something that needs more than your pastor can offer unless he or she is a qualified professional counselor. I urge you to find assistance as soon as possible.

You may want to begin with an appointment with your family physician. Also talk with her school counselor. He or she will definitely have contacts in your area.

Some places you can start include:

www.boysandgirlstown.org

Focus on the Family at www.fotf.org. They have an extensive nation-wide directory of great organizations.

New Life/Minirth Meyer Clinics. They have a nation wide presence and can be contacted at 1-800-NEW-LIFE.

Please do not delay in seeking help for your daughter.

Leslie
