Early Alcohol Use, Intoxication Linked to Problems in College
A new study of college undergraduates reveals an early age at first drink (AFD) and early intoxication has been linked to later alcohol-related problems. "As expected, beginning to use alcohol at an earlier age was associated with heavier drinking and the experience of more negative consequences during senior year of college," said Meghan Rabbitt Morean, the corresponding author for the study. "Quickly progressing from first alcohol use to drinking to intoxication was also an important predictor of heavy drinking and the experience of alcohol related problems during senior year of college. For example, an adolescent who consumed his first drink at age 15 was at greater risk for heavy drinking and problems than an adolescent who took his first drink at age 17. Further, an adolescent who took his first drink at age 15 and also drank to intoxication at age 15 was at greater risk for heavy drinking and problems than an adolescent who had his first drink at age 15 and did not drink to the point of intoxication until he was 17." "The best way to prevent heavy drinking and the experience of alcohol-related problems is to prevent alcohol use," said Morean.

Kids Want Tech, Not Clothing, For Back-to-School
A recent survey conducted by online shopping site Ebates finds 43% of parents think kids want new clothing this time of year. What else would they want? Well it seems that the 1,000 kids who were surveyed have their own ideas. In fact, 42% said they’d rather have a new smartphone, a laptop or even a tablet. Of those who were wishing for tech, it was the tweens (8-12) who yearned for the shiny, new gadgets more than the teens. According to the survey, here is what parents think their kids want for back-to-school: 43% clothing, 17% shoes, 17% other, 13% backpack, and 10% high tech. Here is what kids say they want: 42% high tech, 29% clothing, 11% other, 10% shoes, 8% backpack.

Teens and Young Adults Have Oral Sex and Intercourse at Similar Rates
Two-thirds of teens and young adults have had oral sex — about as many as have had sexual intercourse, suggests research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The research shows that only one one in four teens is now having oral sex before intercourse. Many sex researchers had believed that oral sex was being used to defer intercourse, but that doesn't seem to be the case for most teens today, says Terri Fisher, a professor of psychology at Ohio State University. Fisher says she also was struck by the fact that girls and boys gave and received oral sex equally and that sexual activity began at roughly the same age, with 44% of 15- to 17-year-old boys and 39% of girls of that age engaging in some kind of sexual activity with an opposite-sex partner. "It certainly would suggest that the gender differences found previously no longer exist," said Fisher.
